Yelp Is Highlighting Black-Owned Businesses With New Feature
Finding and supporting Black-owned establishments is now easier than ever.

Yelp is just one of the many companies who are pledging to make drastic changes to their business or products in response to the Black Lives Matter protests. On Friday, Yelp announced that Black-owned businesses could label themselves as such, along with a new search tool that will help Yelp users find businesses labeled as Black-owned easier.
According to Forbes, “Yelp has historically depended on review text to generate search results for black-owned businesses, and the company said the new label will make those results more accurate.”
Since the protests broke out in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death by police violence, Yelp said that it saw Black-owned businesses appear in searches 25 times more than this same time last year. Yelp’s philanthropy section is also donating $500,000 each to the Equal Justice Initiative and NAACP Legal Defense Fund, as well as employees now being given more mental health days off for this month.
Yelp CEO Jerry Stoppelman said, “We all have to do our part to get educated, and we must use our voices, votes and whatever power and platform we have to reject racism in all its forms, until we put an end to this oppression that has plagued our country for centuries.”
