8 Style Lessons From Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner
Key fashion tips to take from the English musician, who turns 35 today.
Alex Turner hardly goes unnoticed. On the road since the late 2000s as the frontman of English rock band Arctic Monkeys – and, occasionally, with long-time collaborator and friend Miles Kane as The Last Shadow Puppets – the artist has not only secured his place among the greatest musicians and songwriters of our generation but as one of the most stylish of them, too.
Turner, who turns 35 today, has experimented with a variety of styles over the years, going from a shaggy polo-wearing teenager who “just wanted to be one of The Strokes” to sporting a rockabilly quiff, later swapped for a slicked-back hairdo – and lots, lots of leather. In honor of the musician’s birthday, we’ve selected eight of his key style elements to achieve the rockstar’s look. Take a look below:
Leather jacket
Though Turner’s style has constantly changed over the years, one item is always there: the good old leather jacket. From the iconic “One For The Road” Ornamental Conifer design to Lewis Leathers’ motorcycle styles, this seems to be his favorite piece of clothing both on and off-stage – a classic that amps up any look.
Square sunglasses
A longtime staple worn by rockstars and festival-goers everywhere, sunglasses are always a great addition to basically any look. Turner is often seen sporting classic models, such as this 70s-inspired square design, aviators, and the Ray-Ban Wayfarer.
Colorful suits
Since the release of Arctic Monkeys’ 2013 album “AM,” Turner has sported a variety of 50s through 70s-inspired suits, including many colorful options. He chose a mustard design to perform with The Last Shadow Puppets at Coachella in 2016 – a bold statement that certainly brightens up any party.
Button-down shirts
Summer gigs ask for fresher outfits but that doesn’t necessarily mean dressing down: the musician often opts for light short-sleeve button-down shirts.
Graphic tees
Turner also wears plenty of t-shirts from his favorite bands, movies (a big Stanley Kubrick fan, he can be seen wearing a “Clockwork Orange” tee on the behind-the-scenes short film for 2018’s “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino”), or just statement prints – like this “Give a damn” shirt from New York City-based brand The Deep End Club.
Stripes
The Arctic Monkeys’ frontman also seems to be a huge fan of stripes, often wearing simple combinations of black and white, or blue and white, like the one he wore at the British Summer Time Festival in 2016.
Leather boots
A typical Alex Turner look usually also includes leather boots. The musician has sported a variety of designs, from motorcycle models to dark snakeskin styles – or the more classic Chelsea boot.
Loafers
A more comfortable option is the classic leather loafer, a model successfully brought back to the spotlight by brands like Gucci and Saint Laurent. A go-to for a casual yet stylish look.
