The vast majority of Jeremy Scott’s creations have a playful, theatrical aspect to them – and now, we finally get to see that idea elevated to the level of a dynamic, Broadway-worthy presentation. Lightning Strikes: The Moschino Musical, is the latest short film directed by Scott himself, following his successful stint behind the cameras for Autumn/Winter earlier this year. 

The film, which was shot at the back lot of Universal Studios, stars Scott’s longstanding muse and friend Karen Elson as a daydreaming waitress. The adventure begins with Elson serving patrons in bright multicolored varsity jackets and athleisure-inspired sweaters at a warm diner. Some characters sport quirky breakfast-inspired accessories, such as a hat shaped like a stack of pancakes with dripping syrup. 

The ensemble performs a cover of Chic’s “Everybody Dance” – at one point, Elson appears dressed as a giant hamburger – and then moves to the streets for a rendition of Lipps Inc’s “Funkytown,” both numbers featuring energetic dance sequences and bold-colored designs. In the streets, many of the characters wear thin-striped suits, complete with matching vests and hats. Hat designs include 1920s-inspired “bucket” hats, wide ‘70s-inspired pieces, and fun versions of the classic fedora. 

The final act takes place in a theater, where the characters perform “Lightning Strikes” in glamorous, shimmering outfits on a pinball-themed set. In addition to glittery fuchsia suits, a standout detail in this segment are the arcade-inspired patterns, featured in designs like shirts and shorts. 

The most outstanding looks are the ones sported by the short film’s hero, of course: the multicolor waitress dress with matching blue, orange, and red sturdy heels and bag; the yellow suit ensemble with wide pants; and the metallic fuchsia leather dress and cropped jacket with dangling pinball points buttons. 

Food is the other star of the lineup: many of the designs take direct inspiration from traditional diner dishes, especially hamburgers (featured as a skirt, a jacket, and even a handbag, for example), eggs, pancakes, and milkshakes (blink and you’ll miss the special Moschino coffee pot). Vintage and retro styles from the 1920s through the ‘80s served as inspiration for the collection.

Scott also created elegant suits and jackets that combine black fabrics with colorful comic motifs, along with black-and-white designs that pay homage to Old Hollywood.
