Gucci Tailoring Captures “Life Of A Rock Star”
A$AP Rocky, Tyler the Creator, and Iggy Pop party for Gucci.
There are few fashion figures more coveted than the “rock star.” The phrase evokes something daring, something a bit rebellious, and definitely some effortless cool. But who is the modern rock star, when rock n’roll has passed its prime? Is it a pop star? A rapper? An older icon?
Well, Gucci got one of each for their new tailoring campaign with A$AP Rocky, Tyler the Creator (kind of a pop star?), and Iggy Pop. In the campaign footage, the three roll up to a mansion and party like responsible young gentlemen in their fine sweater-vests and slacks. Seriously, it’s probably the tamest social event A$AP’s ever been to in his life, but somehow it works. I want to respectfully drink one alcoholic beverage with these boys and admire their blue macaw from a safe distance. More important, I’m sure, is that I’d like to purchase Tyler’s monogrammed green sweater.
As they boogie down in the bathroom to “Supernature” by Cerrone, the musicians show off the fashion sensibilities that landed them in the campaign. A$AP and Tyler, who has his own clothing label GOLF WANG, have both been known to turn an unexpected look. Iggy retains the superstar style of decades past.
“There is always this image of eccentricity, because they are in fact eccentric themselves,” explained Creative Director Alessandro Michele. “A certain type of fun is also portrayed and the idea of how one’s obsession with appearances can create a kind of common ground that can become a sort of brotherhood. It was beautiful to see these three men together, seemingly different but very similar.”
