Rick Owens Combines Galactic Edgy and Neutral Designs in Spring Summer 2022 Collection

Fashion’s Lord of Darkness juxtaposes simplistic and complicated designs.

When it comes to fashion, Rick Owens, also known as “Fashion’s Lord of Darkness,” is an expert of theatrics and boldness. His Spring Summer 2022 Collection showed his newest designs of dresses, onesies, coats, and more.

The collection consisted of variations of different outfits, in several different colors and styles. The theme was almost galactic to start, with shapely dress designs and dark makeup. In terms of color, Owens stayed within a specific tonal palette, as most of his designs were black, white or cream, orange, mustard yellow, and sky blue-gray. He didn’t incorporate many patterns into this collection, but he did venture into a few pieces with ombré color changes from white into yellow. Owens also accessorized his looks to perfection, as some of the models wore leather gloves with their looks, almost all of the models were wearing sunglasses, and for shoes, the models either wore thigh-high stiletto boots with straps encompassing the entire leg, or ankle-high stilettos.

The show took place outdoors at a gorgeous venue surrounded by many statues. To signal that the runway was about to start moving, fog came out of the ground to create a dramatic scene, and to make things more theatrical, people began to toss leaves over the models as they started walking, creating a windy and earthy-looking runway walk.

Michèle Lamy, Owens’s wife and creative collaborator, opened the show, walking the runway in a black layered knee-length dress with a sheer mini cape. Her makeup and hair were on point too and completed the look, with black eyeshadow and slicked-back hair. Next came some of his edgier looks, like the model wearing the black sleeveless onesie, holding a black vest, another black onesie set but with several major cutouts on the stomach and a leather overcoat, and the black floor-length dress with a face-covering reaching the mouth and sleeves that allowed just the forearms to show. Dipping into lighter shades, there was also a cream-colored sweater dress with black and white spotted leather stilettos and aviator sunglasses, a look with a sheer white hoodie with yellow on the ends over the same onesie set but in orange, and the orange cardigan-like top under a peach overcoat and pink pants with orange platform stilettos.

Other looks definitely received inspiration from the 70s and 80s, like the look with the black camisole underneath an orange off-the-shoulder knit top, which was very frayed with many holes, and a scarf-like garment that also serves as a hoodie on top, the white skirt and zipped jacket look with puffy sleeves, and the orange floor-length gown with an orange overcoat with puffy sleeves and orange leather gloves. Many of his pieces juxtaposed simplicity with complication, such as the sky blue-gray dress with a cute cutout on the stomach under a white overcoat, contrasting the orange jacket look with a turtleneck-like face covering, worn over orange onesie shorts. One of his most stunning patterned pieces was the black dress, or cape-like garment with a white line pattern on it.

Rick Owens has once again mastered the edgy in his newest collection.
