SANKUANZ Debuts Fall/Winter 2021 Collection

When chaos and disorder become the new norm, how would human beings cope with this reality?

Coming in as a result and reflection of the post-pandemic era, the new Fall/Winter 2021 range from Paris-based visionary label SANKUANZ takes on the task of examining what happens to our society when public order is compromised and common sense is challenged. When chaos and disorder become the new norm, how would human beings cope with this reality?

To address this very topical subject in today’s day and age, Chinese designer and brand’s co-founder Shangguan Zhe decided to hold the runway show under a 1/3 scale replica of the Eiffel Tower located in Tiandu City, Hangzhou. Covered in hasty darkness and symbolic of the pre-pandemic civilization, the absurd building served as sort of an uncanny, dark-humor joke about the times past.

When it comes to garments and accessories featured, the collection continues the cold and sharp style we could see in their previous seasons. The metal spikes, buckled leather straps and cilices meticulously hidden around the waist all symbolize aggression, but not the outward kind. In this range, Zhe decided to direct the aggressions towards the wearer himself, representing self-punishment: “if this world-wide pandemic is nature’s punishment for the human race, then self-punishment is to offset sorrow with sorrow.”

Exaggerated shoulders, metal tassel dress, tweed suits densely decorated with studs all showcase a novel definition of craftsmanship and modern luxury. Low-rise design is adopted for the very first time and is paired with quality denim fabric; the label’s signature Othala Rune symbol is further enhanced this season and speckled through the collection, creating a mysterious atmosphere for the collection and gaining power through repetition. Randomness is another major feature of the collection — for one, Zhe burned the denim fabric with flame torches in order to create unique and irreproducible patterns. Meme prints are another big feature in this innovative Fall/Winter range, conveying fleeting emotions in the form of pop culture and capturing the ephemeral possibilities we have in life.

In addition to presenting hybrid, technical silhouettes that look like they came straight from an imaginary, dystopian war programmed from the near future, the collection also rolls out two big collaborations with Gentle Monster and G-Shock.
