The Belgian-born designer who has always remained somewhat of a mystery is finally going to give us a rare glimpse into his life. Martin Margiela: In His Own Words we’ll see the designer talk about his 20-year career, inspirations, and childhood. Margiela is a designer who has actively chosen to remain out of the spotlight and to let his work do all the talking. He has famously never given any sit-down interviews, released any official portrait photos, and in press statements, he refers to the house as “we”.

The rule-breaking designer is now ready to show us exactly who he is his with this full-length documentary. Directed by Reiner Holzemer The film will feature interviews from Margiela’s former mentor, Jean Paul Gaultier, fashion historian Olivier Saillard, and Carine Roitfeld. Speaking on the project Holzemer said that by the end of the movie, “you will have the feeling that you’ve met the guy even though you haven’t.”

Margiela himself provides the self-commentary and he explains why he has chosen to remain anonymous for all these years, “I made this decision to protect myself; I could give more if I was protected.” Margiela left the label in 2009 and continues to remain an enigma but despite the lack of a public persona his influence on fashion can still be seen today. His innovations and rejection of traditional branding have helped to cement his reputation as a true fashion maverick.

Last Friday the documentary was leaked on Porn Hub but has now been removed. The film will officially be available to stream on April 10th.
